Leyte mayor surrenders ahead of Duterte's 'shoot on sight' deadline - Palace

MANILA, Philippines -- Albuera, Leyte Mayor Ronaldo Espinosa Sr. surrendered Tuesday morning, hours before a deadline set by President Rodrigo Duterte to do so or risk a "shoot on sight order," presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said.

However, his son Kerwin, who Duterte also wants to surrender, remains at large, Abella added.

The mayor is "now under the custody of (Philippine National Police Director General Ronald) dela Rosa, the spokesperson said.

On Monday, Duterte gave the Espinosas, who have been linked to illegal drugs, 24 hours to surrender "otherwise an order of 'shoot on sight' will be given if they resist and endanger the lives of arresting officers."

The deadline came after two of the mayor's bodyguards and three of his employees were arrested during a buy-bust operation in Albuera Thursday. Police recovered some P1.9 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride or "shabu"Â during the operation.

In Leyte, provincial police director Senior Superintendent Franco Simborio said: "Mabuti at nag-surrender na siya at magiging peaceful na ang kalagayan ng mga tao sa Albuera (It's good he has surrendered so the people of Albuera can be at peace)."
