OPM Rock legend Pepe Smith dies, 71

OPM rock legend Jose William Feliciano “Pepe” Smith passed away on Monday. He was 71.


The news of Smith’s passing was confirmed by his daughter Daisy Smith-Owen on Facebook.
“Thank you for everything papa bear ko. Thank you for being the best dad in the world,” she said.
“I know you’re in the best place now, no more pains papa.. I will see you in a few days. I love you to the moon and back.”
On September 17, Smith underwent a gallbladder surgery at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila.
Several years ago, Smith also suffered a stroke that left him with speech impairment.
In 1970, Smith joined the rock band Juan dela Cruz Band as a vocalist and drummer along with guitarist and vocalist Wally Gonzales and bassist and vocalist Mike Hanopol.

Bul!ying and physical abuse have been a problem in our society, with some youth always being in the middle of mishaps. Though actions are being taken, it hurts to see other kids hurting their friends.

Arrogance

A video of a girl who ass4ulted another girl in the middle of a field went viral. The virality of the video was, in fact, her doing, she allegedly posted the video on her wall. Her account is now deactivated, and the video was deleted when it got viral and she got bashed.


VIOLENCE

In the video, she was seen walking away from the camera, but only to approach the girl and pull her hair. The girl wasn’t fighting her. She was asking the girl if she had a problem with her, but even when the girl said no, she still continued hurting her. Until she was already sitting on top of the girl.

A friend of theirs tried to stop her but she screamed at the guy and said to not touch or stop her.


Indifference

Throughout the whole video, their friends who were all standing around them never did anything to stop them. Instead, they are shouting for the other girl to fight back.
Doing nothing is also a part of the problem. These kids need to learn how to respect other people.

Complacency

In the comments section, people are saying that the girl is so complacent. She feels untouchable and that she can do anything and get away with it. This may also be the reason why she had the guts to post the video on her Facebook even if she knows that everybody will be able to see it.
Some are calling out to the parents of the victim, to not let this pass by without doing anything. The bully needs to learn a lesson.

Child suffocates inside parked car in Davao




A four-year-old girl died after suffocating inside a car that was parked at the school where her mother works, authorities said. 

Tricia Mae Silay, 4, was declared dead on arrival at Davao Adventist Hospital Tuesday afternoon due to cerebral hypoxia, according to the attending physician Abdulatif Mohamad Alisar.

Initial police investigation revealed the victim was found lying unconscious at the back seat of a black car, parked inside the compound of the school.

PO2 Jim Guelas of Tugbok police said Tricia went inside the car, which was left open by the owner, and was locked inside.

Tricia's mother, a security guard of the school, told police that she brought her daughter to work since no one will be left at home to take care of her.

The owner of the car, who requested anonymity, promised to help the family of the victim.

Senate vote stops Trillanes panel from leading BI bribery probe




The Senate on Monday voted 14-7 to stop Senator Antonio Trillanes IV’s committee from leading the investigation on the bribery scandal involving former Bureau of Immigration (BI) officials.

Majority of the senators voted in favor of a motion to reconsider the referral of Senate Resolution No. 256 filed by Senate President Pro-Tempore Franklin Drilon.

It was Senator Miguel Zubiri who first raised his opposition after the resolution was referred to Trillanes’ panel, the Senate Committee on Civil Service, Government Reorganization and Professional Conduct.

Zubiri argued that it was “prudent” to refer the resolution also to the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights led by Senator Richard Gordon.

Drilon’s resolution urged Trillanes’ committee to look into the possible reorganization of the BI “in order to restore public confidence” following the alleged corruption committed by sacked Associate Commissioners Al Argosino and Michael Robles.

Gordon, who has had word wars with Trillanes, said his committee should have jurisdiction over the investigation, as the BI is an organization that falls under the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Gordon also questioned the intent of the resolution, telling his colleagues: “We can all decide for ourselves, where it is headed.”

He also cited a resolution filed by Senator Leila de Lima, a party-mate of Drilon, which also sought an investigation on the matter. De Lima had since withdrew the resolution in deference to Drilon’s resolution.

Drilon said he took exception to Gordon’s lengthy statements, saying “it suggests there is a conspiracy” between him and De Lima.

“The imputation of some kind of bad faith or ill motive is definitely very offensive on the part of this representation,” De Lima also said.

Trillanes also hit back at Gordon, saying he should just respect the referral of the resolution. “Kung ayaw sa committee mo, bakit pinagpipilitan mo?” he said.

In the end, however, the senators voted to reconsider its referral. The resolution will be considered pending before the Senate Committee on Rules led by Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III.

Missing 17-year-old girl found dead in Cavite river









A 17-year-old girl who had gone missing for four days was found dead early morning on Saturday in Indang, Cavite.

GMA News stringer Rossel Calderon reported Sunday that the body of Melissa Magracia, 17, was found in a river in Barangay Guyam Malaki at past 9 a.m. near the subdivision where she lived.

An initial police investigation showed that Magracia, a student at AMA College in Dasmariñas City in Cavite, was a resident of Belvedere Subdivision in Tanza and went missing on December 6.

Residents told the police that the victim was last seen in her school uniform and on that day, Melissa told her parents that she would go to meet a certain Elric Vidallo, who she said offered her a modeling job. That was the last time they saw her.

Melissa's parents told investigators that their daughter knew Elric through social networking sites.






They said that Elric's social media accounts were deactivated after Melissa went missing.

Police arrested Elric, 31,  at his house in Barangay Harasan on Saturday noon. He has refused to comment on the incident.

Authorities will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of Melissa's death.

Singer-comedian Blakdyak found dead










MANILA -- Singer-comedian Blakdyak was was found dead inside his house in Sampaloc, Manila on Monday, at around 7 p.m.

No other details about the comedian's death have been released as of posting.

Blakdyak, or Joseph Formoran Amoto in real life, is the singer behind famous '90s novelty hits, such as "Modelong Charing," "Noon At Ngayon," and "Asin At Paminta."

In 2014, he made headlines after he was arrested for malicious mischief, alarm and scandal, and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia in his apartment in Cubao.

Despite this, the comedian was able to pick himself up and resume his career.

He headlined shows and gigs, and was collaborating with veteran composer Lito Camo for a new album.




2nd suspect in Adamson student stabbing found dead in jail









MANILA – The second suspect in the fatal stabbing of an architecture student from Adamson University earlier this month was found dead in his prison cell Sunday, police confirmed Monday.

Superintendent Oscar Albayalde, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief, said Reynold Clave was found unconscious by a fellow detainee at the Taguig City police station.


Clave was declared dead on arrival at a hospital at 10:45 p.m., Albayalde said. Initial findings show the suspect died of “medical complexities” including heart attack.






Clave was arrested on October 15, a day after after he and another suspect repeatedly stabbed student Nick Russel Orion, who was on his way home to Barangay Central Signal Village in Taguig.

CCTV footage of the crime showed the two ganging up on Oniot, with one suspect stabbing him multiple times.

Marvin Bernardo, the other suspect, was earlier killed after allegedly trying to evade arrest.
Bernardo was a former convict while Clave was an alleged drug dealer in Barangay Central Signal who was also tagged in several robbery hold-up incidents in Pasay and Pasig, police said.

The victim’s family earlier decried the lack of concern displayed by bystanders and motorists who witnessed the crime. Oniot’s father, Renato, said he cannot accept the fact that some people only watched while his son was being attacked.

Oniot, who sustained 18 stab wounds, was laid to rest on Saturday.






19-year-old female student found dead inside a sugarcane plantation









A lifeless body of a 19-year old CHMSC student Melcah Melgar was found in Purok Tinago Sambag, Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod City last Oct. 19, 2016.

Her body was found along Hacienda road, hidden in the sugar cane plantation located just five hundred meters from their house. According to a witness who last seen Melgar, the heinous crime could have been committed by a suspect riding a single Honda XRM motorcycle wearing a black shirt.

Several people passed by the crime scene, including the victim’s neighbors from sugar cane plantation, hearing rather discreet muffled moans. Grade school students said that they saw a bearded man emerged from the area that quickly walked towards the road and immediately fled.

Early morning the next day, her body was found lying on her tummy, with both hands tied at her back with her lower undergarments slightly pulled down, exposing her butt.






Medico legal shows that the victim is negative of rape as her hymen is still intact. According to Dr. Ely Cong who carried out the autopsy examination, the cause of death was cardio-respiratory arrest secondary to Brain Stem Failure.

Justice for Melcah Melgar is the voice of many for Melcha, nicknamed “Jenjen” by her loved ones, relatives, family and friends. Many are hoping and praying that the suspect may be caught by the police authorities for the death of a hardworking, ambitious young woman whose life was taken away way too soon by the hands of a heartless criminal.




Kerwin Espinosa nabbed in Abu Dhabi









MANILA - Anti-narcotics operatives have arrested suspected drug lord Kerwin Espinosa in Abu Dhabi, Philippine National Police chief, Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa confirmed Monday.

Dela Rosa said he deployed PNP operatives to Abu Dhabi after some overseas Filipino workers reported spotting Espinosa there.

The alleged crime boss was arrested at around 2 a.m. (Philippine time), the PNP chief said.

 He said authorities are preparing the necessary documents for Espinosa's repatriation.






No less than President Rodrigo Duterte accused Espinosa of running a narcotics syndicate in the Visayas. He issued a shoot-to-kill order against the suspected drug lord after the latter ignored calls to surrender.

Espinosa's father, Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, Sr., earlier confirmed his son, also known as "Boss K" in the underground trade, is involved in illegal drugs.

Sources earlier said the younger Espinosa left the Philippines on June 21 bound for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) also said Espinosa left for Hong Kong last June 1, after allegedly undergoing facial plastic surgery.




Duterte to EU, US: Withdraw aid, we will survive

I'll be the first one to go hungry, I'll be the first one to die of hunger... But we will never, never compromise our dignity as Filipinos,' says an indignant President Rodrigo Duterte









MANILA, Philippines – "If you think it's high time for you guys to withdraw your assistance, go ahead. We will not beg for it."

This was President Rodrigo Duterte's message to the European Union and the United States after hearing about how his recent pronouncements may affect the flow of international aid to the Philippines.

"How do you look at us? Mendicants?" asked an indignant Duterte during his speech on Thursday, October 6, at a police camp in Butuan City.

The President asserted that the Philippines, a 3rd world country, can "survive" even without foreign assistance. The worst-case scenario, he said, is he would be the first to suffer from the loss of aid.

"Maski magkahirap dito (Even if we face hardships), we will survive. I'll be the first one to go hungry, I'll be the first one to die of hunger, huwag kayo mag-alala (don't worry). But we will never, never compromise our dignity as Filipinos," he said.

Duterte then said the EU and US will "never understand the pain that we're suffering."

He told them: "Go away. Bring your money to somewhere else." (READ: Duterte to EU: It's true, I'm no statesman)






Threats of aid withdrawal?

The President had apparently heard of the possible withdrawal of assistance from statements made by Vice President Leni Robredo.

"I've been hurled insults – the President, EU and all. Ang masama pa, i-threaten 'nyo, meron tayong official, si Leni, na we lose the international assistance," he said.

Duterte then asked Filipinos to make a choice.

"Mamili kayo, the crumbs of the favor ng ibang nasyon, aasa tayo sa assistance nila or we make a stand that this country has to survive, that this country must see to it that the next generation is protected?" he said.

He again defended his controversial drug war.

"If we don't interdict this evil of drugs, ang mga anak natin, ang mga apo natin, reckon from where I stand now, kawawa sila (our children, our grandchildren, from where I stand now, they will be pitiful)," said Duterte.

The President's dismissal of international aid comes a day after Vice President Robredo said in a press conference that Duterte should be more careful in making public statements.

While Robredo emphasized how the government should nurture the trust of the international community, she also said there has been no threats of aid withdrawal from other countries.

"Kahit maraming nangyayari, 'di pa rin naman kami nakakaramdam ng pag-withhold ng support," Robredo had said.

Last Monday, the US State Department cited the rapid deployment of US troops in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013.

In recent weeks, Duterte has unleashed invectives against the US, EU, and United Nations for criticizing his controversial drug war supposedly without basis.




Suspect in Davao City bombing arrested, military says









A suspect in the bombing of a night market in Davao City have already been arrested, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said Friday.

In an advisory, the military said no less than Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana will be presenting the arrested suspect Friday afternoon.

As of posting time, no other details were available.

At least 15 people were killed while 70 others were injured when an explosion rocked the Roxas Night Market last September 2.

President Rodrigo Duterte, who was in Davao City during the bomb attack, had declared a state of national emergency on the account of lawless violence in Mindanao.

The Davao City government has offered a P3-million reward for information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect.






An initial investigation showed that the suspects used an improvised explosive device composed of 60mm and 81 mmmm mortar. Investigators said the IED was constructed in the same way as the one used in the explosion at the Ecoland Terminal, also in Davao.

Earlier reports have it that the suspect, wearing a mask, had a massage minutes before the bomb attack. The suspect had eight companions.

Nine people have already been charged with multiple murder and frustrated multiple murder in connection with the bombing but only one of them has been identified.




Davao court to issue arrest order vs Matobato









A Davao City court will be issuing a warrant of arrest for Edgar Matobato after the self-confessed hitman failed to show up at a scheduled hearing.

Matobato was supposed to be arraigned on Tuesday at Davao City's Municipal Trial Court Branch 3 for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition but he and his lawyer Atty. Gregorio Andolana failed to show up.

Judge Silverio Mandalupe said he will issue a warrant of arrest and cancel Matobato's bail bond in favor of the government.

Matobato, who had tagged President Rodrigo Duterte in summary killings during his time as mayor, is accused of carrying a Colt .45 caliber pistol outside of his home without a permit or valid authority on June 19, 2014.

"There [is] reasonable ground to believe that a crime has been committed and that the accused is probably guilty," according to Assistant City Prosecutor Oliver Saniel.
Matobato was also earlier tagged in the abduction of alleged terrorist Sali Makdum.




DOJ chief says ex-De Lima aide may testify against her









Metro Manila — A former security aide of Sen. Leila De Lima may testify against her and reveal her links to the illegal drug trade inside New Bilibid Prison, Department of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre told PEPph.

Aguirre said he spoke on Friday morning with Sgt. Jonel Sanchez, a current member of the Presidential Security Group (PSG).

"I've talked to him… and there are indications he wants to cooperate," Aguirre said.

During the House of Representatives' hearing on drug trade in the New Bilibid Prison last Tuesday, witness and convict Herbert Colanggo claimed that Sanchez collected drug money inside the prison and delivered it to De Lima.






The Presidential Security Group has ordered Sanchez back to barracks after he was implicated in the Bilibid drug probe.

PSG spokesman Ltc. Michael Aquino said the move was done to "ensure Sanchez's safety."

"We immediately placed him confined in the barracks so that we can give way for the investigation," Aquino said.

Investigating Sanchez will include a lifestyle check, according to Aquino. As for the ongoing House probe, Aquino said "[they] will cooperate" and have Sanchez attend the hearing if he is summoned.




De Lima says Sebastian a gov’t asset, OK if he testifies









Senator Leila de Lima has confirmed that convicted drug lord Jaybee Sebastian, who is being linked to her, was a government asset.

“Yes, yes” was De Lima’s categorical answer during a press conference on Thursday when asked about the report that Sebastian was a government asset.

“The reason I’m saying that he’s an asset is [because] to dispel ‘yung mga haka-haka na naman, ‘yung malicious insinuations na the reason why hindi na muna s’ya sinama doon sa Bilibid 19 because favored, protektado at lalo na ‘yung insinuation na ‘yan na s’ya ang komokolekta para sa akin,” she said.

(The reason I’m saying that he’s an asset is to dispel the malicious insinuations that the reasons why he was not among the Bilibid 19 were because he was favored and protected, and that he was collecting money for me.)

But De Lima said she would  rather that Sebastian answer the allegations  in case the latter decides to appear at the House committee on justice investigating the alleged proliferation of illegal drugs at the New Bilibid Prison during her time as justice secretary.

After all, she said, the alleged witnesses presented at the House probe were targeting Sebastian to pin her down.

That was why, De Lima said, she would not be surprised anymore if Sebastian would also testify against her.“Let him (Sebastian) address that. If he wants to testify, let him address that,” she said.
“But para lang to dispel that insinuation na kaya ganun, kaya hindi kaagad trinansfer is because kakuntsaba namin noon. The real kuntsaba there is because nanggagaling sa kanya ‘yung ibang information,” the senator added.

(But to dispel those insinuations, the reason why he was not immediately transferred was because he was working with us. He was working with us by sharing information with us.)






Duterte wants war on crime, drugs extended for 6 more months









“GIVE me another six months.”

President Duterte on Sunday admitted that he could not stop crime and illegal drugs in three to six months.

“I never realized the problem is this big,” he said, referring to the drug problem in the country.

The President made the admission during the presentation to the media of freed Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad in Davao City.

“I can’t kill them all,” he added.

Since Duterte’s assumption to office, over 700,000 had surrendered while over 3,000 drug suspects were killed in police anti-drug operation or by assassins of drug gangs.

Stopping crime and criminality in three to six months was Duterte’s major campaign promise last May.




Comedian Joy Viado passes away









MANILA - Joy Viado has passed away, a source close to the comedian confirmed Saturday evening. She was 57. 

After suffering a heart attack, Viado was taken at the Quezon City General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m., according to her best friend, Annete Lucido, per ABS-CBN News' MJ Felipe. 

In an interview with DZMM, Viado's son, Joseph Cristopher, said she had difficulty breathing after arriving home from a friend's place Saturday. 

"Galing siya sa bahay ng kaibigan niya, at paguwi niya ay medyo nahihirapan na siyang huminga," Joseph shared. "Tapos nung tinakbo namin siya sa hospital, sa kotse pa lang eh talagang nahihirapan na siya. Sa hospital, sinubukan i-revive pero [dead on arrival]." 

A wake for Viado will be held at the Arlington Memorial Chapels Sunday afternoon, added Joseph.

A veteran comedienne who has featured in numerous television series and films, Viado last made headlines in 2015 when she broke down as she appealed for help to save her foot from amputation due to diabetes complications.
